Depression
Depression, or feelings of being depressed may be a condition which someone may or may not be able to identify. Such a determination depends on degrees of self-awareness, which varies from one person to another.
To be better able to evaluate depression for yourself, the following list of criteria can serve as a measuring tool for doing so.
- Feelings of sadness and hopelessness
- Lack of motivation and energy
- Inability to enjoy favorite activities
- Easily irritated
- Feelings of guilt
- Feelings of worthlessness
- Increased difficulty making decisions
- Increased difficulty concentrating, and focusing
- Abrupt, significant changes in body weight
- Erratic fluctuations in appetite.
- Sleep disruptions such as insomnia, or hypersomnia
- Thoughts of death, dying, and/or suicide
When a qualifying combination of any of the above symptoms exists for a duration of time, and he/she is finding it more difficult to function socially and occupationally, it is a strong indication that assistance is warranted. Treatment will entail an assessment of any pertinent precipitants (causes), such as loss, interpersonal difficulty, or unfulfilled needs.
